With spring fast approaching, it is time to start thinking about the warmer weather and if it is time to replace your AC unit. Some of us might still be using our heaters, but there’s no better time than now to think about the hot spring and summer months to come. Who wants to be stuck in a hot house without air conditioning?
Here are some signs to look for now, so that you’re ready before the really hot weather comes in the Anna Maria Island area of Florida.
Check to see how old your air conditioning unit is. Most air conditioners aren’t made to last much longer than ten years. Furthermore, if your AC unit is older than ten years a replacement might be necessary anyway. You’ll see why as we go on.
If your air conditioner was made before 2010, the coolant used in it is called Freon, and as of January 2020, the United States, in compliance with the EPA’s Clean Air Act phased out the use of Freon and replaced it with Puron. This doesn’t automatically mean that your specific unit needs to be replaced. But considering the age of your unit, and the rising cost of any leftover Freon, it might be the best alternative economically. Definitely have a conversation with your HVAC technician to determine what is best for you and your home, perhaps the ac could be repaired with retrofitting.
Having a newer AC unit will give you a higher SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating. Meaning that your unit is more energy efficient, saving you money on your energy bill each month.
